We’ve already seen 16 below zero this week and the rivers are really icing up now. But on the relatively warmer days, and during the warmest part of the afternoon, you can still get out there to fish. This 19-inch brown was caught up in the Taylor Canyon on December 8th. The fish were actually very active. Egg patterns and small midge larvae worked well.

We’re all expecting a big run-off this season, and it will probably be a long one as well. In addition to the snow-melt contributing to swollen rivers, we’ll also see some substantial flows for the Taylor River all summer long. The forecast for scheduled releases from the Taylor Reservoir include peak flows of over 600 cfs during July. The forecasts will be subject to change based on how fast the snow melts and fills up the reservoir. You can view the proposed forecast as of June 7, 2011 on our web site here:

Taylor Reservoir Flows

We should expect high water this summer and good flows during September and into October. Of course, it all depends on Mother Nature. And she’s been less than predictable these past couple of months.

We are sad to announce that Bruce Hoagland passed away on Sunday, January 23, 2011. The following was written by Jo Evans and forwarded to us by David Nickum:

Some years ago, CTU wanted to recognize Bruce Hoagland for his years of achievements. There really wasn’t an appropriate award, so we decided to create a new, state level “super achiever” award. It was not intended to be an annual award, for it was to reflect decades of outstanding service and commitment to Colorado Trout Unlimited. We wondered what to call this award for this special man. Lifetime achievement? No. That sounded too prosaic. Trout hero? Maybe… How about the TGFB (the Thank God for Bruce) Award? Ultimately, we decided to simply name it after the man we wanted to honor – The Bruce Hoagland Award.

Bruce joined CTU in 1973 as a member of Boulder Flycasters. He served as President of Boulder Flycasters, Vice president of CTU, President of CTU, Executive Director of CTU, President of the Gunnison Angling Society and Director at Large.

Bruce worked tirelessly not only as a conservation champion but also as both a remarkable steward of CTU and a steadfast spokesman for the chapters. As president he visited every chapter. He made all of us- every member, every chapter – full partners in his efforts.

Navigating and holding the course in a calm sea is one thing –and clearly important- but Bruce got us through some really rough seas. Remember when we had a little problem with a potential lawsuit and asset loss over a disagreement on flow regimes on the Arkansas? Bruce worked to create the Silver Trout Foundation with the Steve Lundy Bequest, protecting the $100,000.00 and setting the funds in a place to grow. And they have.

Under Bruce’s leadership we successfully fought Two Forks, achieved success with the Greenback Restoration Program, coordinated a national environmental response to the proposed regulation of Mining waste, and fought what at that time DOW referred to as ‘just a cold that trout sometimes get’—whirling disease.

When Bruce retired and moved to Gunnison so he could ‘just fish’, he also ‘just’ joined the Gunnison Chapter, worked on Superfly, became President of the Gunnison chapter, worked on bug zappers, chapter vitality, wrote a chapter leaders’ handbook, served as Area Vice President, and served as a CTU Director at Large. That was retirement, Hoagland style.

Bruce, my friend for these last 30 years, I miss you. Whether they know it or not, CTU leaders, today’s and tomorrow’s, will be standing on your shoulders.

- Jo Evans
